Butterfield burst back into the Hong Kong Derby Power Rankings™️ but our experts are still keeping cautious about the Brazilian import’s chances in the big race.
Last Sunday’s 1,800m Class 2 at Sha Tin contained six Derby candidates and was billed as the “1.5th” leg of the four-year-old series by some, so it was always going to change the complexion of the rankings.
Butterfield’s win pushed him from outside the top 14 to tenth, but runner-up Columbus County also moved two spots up the rankings into fifth.
The big Derby news this week was that Zac Purton has been booked to ride top ranked More Than This in the second leg of the four-year-old series, the Hong Kong Classic Cup (February 23), replacing Ryan Moore.
Purton has a few irons in the fire as far as Derby option are concerned. Columbus County is likely to contest a 2,000m Class 2 on Classic Cup day and the Australian jockey partnered Private Secretary in a trial at Sha Tin on February 4.
